The food retailing environment is diverse. Being able to scope out the landscape and navigate through a changing environment requires a GPS tuned in to the current "speak" of supermarket retailing. The health and wellness movement is firmly here to stay and food is at its very center. The quest for healthier living, energy and vitality is fundamentally changing the way shoppers plan meals, shop for food and spend on groceries. The food retailing industry is changing with it, adapting its marketing, merchandising and sales strategies to connect with both new shoppers and changing needs of their existing shopper base. Increasingly, food retailers are engaging the help of retail dietitians to provide a holistic health and wellness offering in their stores. As most industries, food retailing has a unique language. Understanding the key points that frame the varied and changing functions of a food retailer, familiarizing yourself with retail jargon and terminology, and being able to navigate basic retail financials and measures, will greatly help you hit the ground running as you explore a career in retail dietetics.
