Culinary Traditions to Promote Asian Health: New Research on Historic Cuisine
Culinary Traditions to Promote Asian Health: New Research on Historic Cuisine
This session discusses the resources that are available from the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics as well as resources from other health organizations.
This products is free for those who attended FNCE® 2019.
The Mediterranean diet is a well-studied cultural model of healthy eating, yet limited public health messaging is dedicated to healthy models from other cultures and cuisines, such as traditional Asian diets. Obesity rates for Asian Americans are rising faster than other demographics, highlighting the need for more inclusive dietary messaging. This session will make attendees aware of the resources that are available from the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics as well as resources from other health organizations. Examples of culturally relevant foods and food beliefs from the Far East, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent will help practitioners work with clients of Asian descent to build a meal plan or nutrition intervention that is respectful, practical, and culturally inclusive. This session will also update practitioners on considerations when conducting needs assessments (such as diabetes risk), as well as give a research update on studies of traditional Asian dietary models.
