One in seven people in the United States has chronic kidney disease (CKD), and one in three are at risk of developing CKD. RDNs care for people with CKD across the continuum of care but may not always feel well prepared to do so. This session will demystify nutritional management of CKD through discussion of emerging information, including the updated Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) Practice Guidelines, anticipated practice changes related to the 2019 Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative, and the 2020 revision of the Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance (SOP/SOPP) for RDNs in Nephrology Nutrition. The revised standards provide an up-to-date guide for all RDNs who provide care or services for people with CKD and support an RDN’s self-evaluation to guide development or maintenance of knowledge and skills for quality and equitable care and services for individuals at all stages of CKD.
