Low carb and ketogenic meal plans can improve glycemic control and weight. Current guidelines now include low and very low carbohydrate eating patterns (less than 26% of total calories) as a treatment strategy. These meal plans have grown in popularity and many people with diabetes (PWD) may choose to follow one. It is important for dietitians and diabetes care and education specialists to support PWD through education on how to optimize the low carb meal plan, as well as facilitating medication adjustments to reduce hypoglycemia. This session will review the evidence for low carbohydrate nutrition for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, provide practical tips for implementing low carbohydrate meal plans, and discuss the medication adjustments needed as the PWD transitions to a lower carb lifestyle.
