Only about one in six low-income children who participate in school lunch participate in Federal Summer Nutrition Programs. Regardless of practice area, RDNs, NDTRs, and dietetics students can all play a role in helping to address child food insecurity during the summer. Participants will receive an overview of the Summer Nutrition Program and its health, academic and overall benefits for children and their families.

This session will also share innovative approaches used in North Carolina to increase the number of children reached through the Summer Nutrition Program, including developing sustainable partnerships by engaging high school students in the development of a statewide branding and marketing campaign, and hosting regional SummerPalooza! Summits to support organizations in expanding their Summer Nutrition Programs. A case study of the collaborative approach used by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Food for the Summer Program to expand the program will also be discussed.
