Schools play a critical role in promoting lifelong wellness. RDNs play an active part in this effort by serving on local school wellness policy committees, consulting with schools on nutrition, and providing nutrition education in schools. Learn how the Iowa Department of Education collaborated with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation to connect nearly 100 schools with RDN School Wellness Coaches to change school environments through the Kids Eat Right Meet the Challenge program. Explore ways to engage school nutrition directors, administrators, teachers, and parents in school wellness efforts. This session will also present formative research on cooking-based nutrition education provided in afterschool settings. Learn how this research informed USDA's new Team Nutrition Cooks! lessons designed to teach children basic cooking skills while trying new fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Get access to free nutrition education materials and become a school wellness champion!
