Problematic eating behaviors occur in approximately 25-35% of typically developing individuals, but can be as high as 90% in individuals with Autism. Individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are reported to have problematic eating behaviors such as food selectivity, aberrant mealtime behaviors, motor impairments, and sensory processing abnormalities. The relationship between sensory processing difficulties, aberrant mealtime behaviors, motor impairments, and dietary intake in individuals with an ASD remains relatively unknown due the complexities of the four domains across disciplines and to limited quantitative assessment tools. Validated eating screening procedures in ASDs have narrowly focused on one or two of the aforementioned domains. Therefore, the first eating screening inventory (SAMIE) was developed. This session will discuss the utility of the SAMIE, promote using it to assist professionals in screening and further assessment, and detail how it can potentially guide interventions.
