We know that evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines (EBNPG) are a cornerstone of dietetics practice. But how much are they actually implemented and what impact does that have on patient care?

This session will discuss new research from the Academy that answers these questions. Topics included will be discrepancies between self-reported and measured knowledge that limit the assessment of dietetic competency and barriers that prevent practitioners from effectively using the EBNPGs such as guideline confusion and sense of competence.

The second half of the presentation will describe how the Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes EBNPG was used in a study to measure how adherence to guideline recommendations impacts the health outcomes of patients with prediabetes. The session will conclude by considering how practitioners can accurately self-assess their knowledge and use of EBNPGs to improve patient care and dietetics professionalism.
