A changing practice environment with increased emphasis on multi-disciplinary teams, requires higher order reasoning skills and the ability to effectively communicate ideas with other professionals necessitating a change in approach to the education of nutrition professionals. Team-based learning (TBL) began in business schools but is now used in medical and pharmacy schools to encourage peer learning and team collaboration.
Dietetic programs can benefit from integrating the TBL technique into the delivery of nutrition curriculum to increase learner engagement and promote deep learning. TBL promotes critical thinking among students, illustrated through the use of compelling questions discussed through teams. Adding an effective technological component to TBL and other group learning settings promotes student engagement, efficiency and transparency in the learning process. The session will describe benefits and potential pitfalls of TBL using the TBL format to deliver session content.
