The gut microbiome directly affects the immune system and what we eat directly affects the gut microbiome. This session examines the effect of macro- and micronutrients as well as dietary patterns on gut microbial community structure and function. Research on the gut microbiome is in its early stages but it is essential for dietitians to consider the impact of food on this extraordinary system when counseling patients.
