Imagine finding fresh and healthy options at the supermarket checkout. Would people's shopping baskets improve? This session will make the public health and business cases for healthy checkout aisles.

With high rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, the retail environment should be shaped not only by economic drivers but also by public health considerations. This session proposes that addressing the retail food environment could begin with checkout, where the vast majority of purchases are unplanned and many of the options are of poor nutritional value.

By rethinking checkout, RDNs can help retailers support their customers' health. This session will feature an in-depth case study about a program that has successfully implemented healthy checkout aisles in more than 50 stores in West Virginia, highlight examples of healthy checkout projects across the country and overseas, and present recommendations for checkout.
