Autism is a neurological condition with diverse presentation, though sensory abnormalities are common. Unusual sensory processing is manifested in many behaviors, particularly in the realm of food where disordered eating is well documented. This presentation contrasts what is understood regarding disordered eating on the autism spectrum against standard criteria in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Two experienced clinicians will compare typical patterns of disordered eating for the autism cohort and discuss how it both fits the clinical understanding as well as the ways that it does not match the archetypal eating disorder profile.

Applications for practice will be the predominant focus of the session, with pragmatic and effective treatment options discussed. This comparison will make clear that many eating pathologies on the spectrum look comparable to those experienced by the general population, but appear to satisfy different needs and require alternative treatment options

Learning Objectives

  1. Contrast Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) in the general population against presentation of symptoms for those on the autism spectrum.
  2. Identify applicable objective criteria for Binge Eating Disorder for individuals with autism and contrast with subjective criteria that are typically not applicable.
  3. Describe treatment options for symptoms of disordered eating on the autism spectrum regardless of diagnosis criteria.

Speakers

Beth Harrell, MS, RD, LD, CEDRD

Beth is a Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian who has worked in all levels of care for eating disorders from childhood to elderly and with all varieties of diagnosed eating disorders and disordered eating. She currently is Director of Certification for iaedpTM, manages a private practice working exclusively with disordered eating (adults and teens) and is adjunct faculty for a private university.

Janice Goldschmidt, MS, RD, LDN

Janice received her Master's Degree from the University of Maryland-College Park in Nutrition and Food Science and is currently completing a Master's in Public Health from the same institution. As Director of Nutrition Services at a large community-based program for adults with disabilities, she is responsible for the design and implementation of a range of nutrition-based programming.
