This webinar will translate the latest science on aging and nutrition into actionable steps for those 50, 60, 70, and beyond. A review of normal age changes will set the stage for recommendations for dietary patterns that work for older adults to prevent and manage chronic diseases. In addition, key micronutrients that are often in short supply in the diets of older adults will be covered, emphasizing nutrient-rich food choices to meet the needs. A brief review of dietary supplements commonly used by this population will be discussed. Attendees will learn what it takes to eat well as we age.

Learning Objectives:

  1. List key elements for choosing a healthy eating pattern for optimal aging.
  2. Summarize research on the role of dietary protein in supporting muscle mass and preventing sarcopenia, with emphasis on protein quality and timing of intake.
  3. Identify key micronutrients that are needed in greater amounts with aging and list nutrient-rich foods to meet the need.
  4. Describe dietary supplements commonly used by older adults and when supplementation might be beneficial to fill nutrient gaps.

Christine Rosenbloom, PhD, RDN, FAND

Dr. Rosenbloom is president of Chris Rosenbloom Food and Nutrition Services, LLC and nutrition professor emerita at Georgia State University. She is the co-author of the consumer book, Food & Fitness After 50. Dr. Rosenbloom was the sports dietitian for the Georgia Tech Athletic Association and for the Georgia State athletes. She is the editor-in-chief of two editions of Sports Nutrition: A Practice Manual for Professionals and served as assistant editor for the 6th edition released in 2017.
