Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the history of lipid injectable emulsions (ILEs) and the composition of commercially available ILEs in the United States.
  2. Learn about various mechanisms in which fatty acids may inhibit or heighten the inflammatory response and subsequent development of infections in hospitalized patients.
  3. Evaluate the literature in terms of the relationship between the use of olive oil-based or supplemental fish oil ILE and incidence of infection and duration of hospital length of stay in hospitalized, non-critically ill patients receiving commercially available ILEs.
