Learning Objectives
- Understand the history of lipid injectable emulsions (ILEs) and the composition of commercially available ILEs in the United States.
- Learn about various mechanisms in which fatty acids may inhibit or heighten the inflammatory response and subsequent development of infections in hospitalized patients.
- Evaluate the literature in terms of the relationship between the use of olive oil-based or supplemental fish oil ILE and incidence of infection and duration of hospital length of stay in hospitalized, non-critically ill patients receiving commercially available ILEs.
