Nutrition and dietetics practitioners must be inclusive in conversations and recommendations supporting people across all demographics and socioeconomic status focusing on connections over corrections during education and program implementation.

Moderated by Leslie Bonci, MPH, RDN, CSSD, FAND and Chair of NEP-DPG, the two speakers with shared years of experience working with universities, non-profit organizations, government agencies, public schools and community groups to become more effective communicators through better understanding of how societal systems normalize group traits over others. Understanding how personal experience impacts perceptions and actions can increase relevance in communication with more buy-in, engagement and impact with audiences. The presentations will guide participants in recognizing the 'urgency of awareness' toward more inclusive and effective communication.

Speakers

Jodi Pfarr, BS, MDiv

Jodi Pfarr's engaging style–and trademark humor–allow her to effectively connect with diverse audiences. Her ongoing clients represent a broad range of groups. These include teachers, religious institutions, social service workers, countless government agencies, various fire, and police departments such as the Memphis Fire and Police Departments and the St. Paul Police Department; judicial systems throughout the nation, including Ohio and Minnesota judges and corporations such as General Mills, Goodwill, the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Habitat for Humanity & American Indian nations including Menominee.

Since 2001, Jodi Pfarr has worked internationally conducting impactful seminars that leave people learning and laughing. Through her captivating presentations and consulting, Jodi seeks to help people discover the human connections that unite us all—unlocking potential within communities ,institutions and individuals alike.

Miah Nelson, MS, RDN, LD

Miah Nelson holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas and completed both a Master of Science in Nutrition and a Dietetic Internship at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. Her specialty is Sports Nutrition. She is a Texas Special Diets Dietitian with the Houston Independent School District and responsible for all special diet needs for students. This includes food allergies, texture modifications, tube feedings, and specialized diet needs (Diabetes, PKU, real disease, etc.). Miah conducts educations and trainings for all nutrition services staff members and school staff members on the importance of special diets, their role in special diet implementation, and how to safely accommodate students. She is building a Sports Nutrition program in the Nutrition Services department to educate school-aged athletes and encourage proper fueling to improve performance. Miah looks forward to sharing her experiences, building partnerships with other dietitians and being a dietitian that influences change. She is passionate about nutrition education for all people.
