The webinar will define structural barriers to health equity and describe how stigma reflects societal values at a structural level. Using a case study approach, we will draw a distinction between structural barriers and the social determinants of health. We will also review the five steps to structural competency described in the seminal work of Metzel and Hansen (2014). Webinar participants learn how to conceptualize interventions that address structural barriers using a more integrated and interdisciplinary conceptualization of health and well-being. Webinar participants will have the opportunity to reflect on how to re-conceptualize health care delivery in a way that centers on health equity.

Ann D. Bagchi PhD, DNP, FNP-C, APN

Ann D. Bagchi, PhD/DNP, Assistant Professor in Rutgers' School of Nursing, is a sociologist and nurse practitioner with more than 20 years' experience researching the social and structural causes of health inequities. Her research has focused on members of underserved communities, including racial/ethnic groups, people living with HIV, and immigrants with limited English proficiency. Her current work examines structural societal factors that lead to health inequities. Her goal is to enhance interprofessional teams that include patients as equal members to ensure truly patient-centered care. She has worked with members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in the development of a seminar on structural competency. This preliminary work will inform further research and workshop development to expand structural competency training throughout health care education and practice. Aside from her role at Rutgers, Dr. Bagchi works part-time as a nurse practitioner in a long-term care/rehab facility and is involved in a number of voluntary activities. For 15 years she has run a winter soup kitchen for Latino Day Laborers in Freehold, New Jersey and she is a steering committee member of the Latino Action Network. She was recently nominated the Board of Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey.
