Following this webinar, the participant will be able to identify the different etiologies and stages of AKI, and then will be able to apply the best practices of medical nutrition therapy for each.

Speakers

Ann Beemer Cotton, MS, RD, CNSC

Ann Beemer Cotton has over 30 years of clinical practice spanning the areas of level one trauma, critical care, gastrointestinal surgery and outpatient dialysis. She completed her dietetic internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati and later received a master of science degree from the Medical Dietetics Division of The Ohio State University with research focused on defining a nutrition screening tool for patients receiving chronic hemodialysis. 

Ann has been an invited speaker to many symposiums and webinars with topics spanning nutrition support in acute kidney injury, wound healing, pancreatitis, hepatic dysfunction, and  micronutrient dosing. She has authored chapters on AKI and Nutrition for the Clinical Guide to Nutrition Care in Kidney Disease and the Core Curriculum for the American Nephrology Nurse’s Association. For 6 years, Ann served on the National Kidney Foundation Council of Renal Nutrition Executive in the roles of Region III Representative, Renalink Editor and Associate Chair. Her research efforts have explored the impact of protein debt on complication rates in the trauma population and the benefits of initiating a volume based feeding protocol in a surgical intensive care unit.

Ann has been a Clinical Dietitian Specialist in Critical Care for the Surgical Trauma Critical Care unit at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for the past 14 years.

Sarita Bajpai RDN, CNSC, CD, PhD

Sarita Bajpai, completed her Masters and doctorate in nutrition from University of Delhi, India before she came to Kansas city. She did a post-doctoral fellowship on isolation of parathyroid hormone from bovine parathyroid glands for a couple of years before moving to Indianapolis where she completed her dietetic internship. Sarita enjoys the challenges of taking care of patients with kidney disease who were trying to deal with complex health/nutrition issues. Through those experiences, she realized that this is what she wanted to do. Luckily, she started working as a renal dietitian right out of internship. 27 years later she continues to enjoy the challenges in providing nutrition care to patients in a medical intensive care unit with complex medical and nutrition issues.
