This presentation will identify what exposure and response prevention is and how it can be used in relation to treating eating disorders. Speaker Julia Cassidy will review how this evidence-based practice can be an effective way to strategically apply nutrition interventions by helping to manage the patient's sensitivity, reactive resistance, sustain the fragile therapeutic alliance and facilitate the progression towards treatment goals. There are 5 main interventions that will be identified and how they are applied to help the patient decrease their anxiety around the feared food. The primary goal during exposure and response exposure sessions is for the individual to remain connected with the fear foods as they are in the process of healing their relationship with food.

Julia Cassidy, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S

Julia Cassidy is the Director of Dietary for Center for Discovery where she has worked for over 14 years. She has had the privilege to grow into her position as director by starting out as a diet tech, then Dietitian to Dietary Supervisor and now Director of Dietary Services. She a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and a Licensed Body Positive facilitator. She is also the Co-Chair for the Nutrition SIG with AED (Academy for Eating Disorders), which allows for her to be the liaison to DEED (Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders) through the SCAN DPG (Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition – A Didactic practice group for The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics). She has presented on the topic of eating disorders, dietary application in the treatment of eating disorders and intuitive eating both nationally and internationally. She has the responsibility to oversee 17 Dietitians nationwide and she has developed the RD Manual in addition to updating the nutrition program used with all clients in the adolescent residential programs at Discovery.
