In this webinar, there will be discussion on the evidence for functional foods, risk factor reduction, and disease modification. The cardioprotective effects of bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, phytochemicals, omega-3 fatty acids, catechins affecting the atherosclerosis timeline will be shown. In addition, role, and evidence for dietary supplements such as garlic, curcumin, and cocoa flavanols will be reviewed. Evidence for reduction of inflammation and interaction with gut microbiome will be evaluated, including regulation by TMAO, short chain fatty acids, and bile acids. Finally, how modifiable oral and gut microbiome are as well as diagnosis and treatment of dysbiosis will be covered.

Speaker

Shaista Malik, MD, PhD, MPH

Shaista Malik is a tenured professor in the UCI division of cardiology, department of medicine. She is also the founding medical director of the preventive cardiology and cardiac rehab programs. Dr. Malik is the founding executive director or the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute and the founding associate vice chancellor, integrative health, of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences.

Dr. Malik received her BA and BS degrees from Stanford University. She received her MD degree from UC Irvine and graduated with AOA honors. She also completed a MPH degree with honors and a PhD degree both from UCLA's School of Public Health. She has received several National Institute of Health grants, including a career development award, a K23, from NIH (NHLBI) looking at the role of cardiac CT in those with diabetes and the principle investigator of a RO1 grant, looking at the genetic, protein, and imaging markers of early heart disease. Her research efforts have had high impact, with 68 peer-reviewed publications and co-editor of two textbooks, which have garnered 25,889 citations. She is also associate editor of three academic journals.
