Despite decades of research, the associations between dietary cholesterol consumption and risks for cardiovascular disease and mortality remain controversial. Adding to this controversy are the confusing recommendations in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Guidelines state that cholesterol is not a nutrient of concern for overconsumption, but also recommend that individuals should consume as little dietary cholesterol as possible while following a healthy eating pattern.
