Stories awaken the senses, convey emotional insights, and leave listeners pondering new truths. Neuroscience shows that the brain releases a hormone associated with empathy and trust in response to character-driven narratives. But many people think, "I don't have any stories to tell." This session can solve that challenge for you. Participants will learn how to tell stories that capture the hearts and minds of their audiences—patients, clients, employees, consumers, or business partners. Both natural or wanna-be storytellers can learn how to create stories of human struggle and triumph that leave the listener pondering new truths. This session will help dietitians find and polish story gems that will enhance their interpersonal counseling relationships and leadership impact. Participants will learn a three-step process for storytelling: 1) find story gems, 2) develop plot and meaning, and 3) polish with salient details.

Speaker

Jean Storlie, MS, RD

As President/Owner of Storlietelling LLC, Jean uses story-based techniques to design and facilitate highly engaging strategic planning, innovation, and team-building. She also runs training programs in business storytelling skills for clients that span boutique consulting firms to Fortune 500 companies across a range of industries. Jean has facilitated innovation in consumer packaged goods, supplier, and direct marketing companies, focusing on building their innovation pipelines. She worked at General Mills for over a decade, where her knack for distilling complex content into compelling communications helped business teams drive business growth for consumer brands like Cheerios and Yoplait.

Jean is also a registered dietitian with a MS degree in exercise science and 40-year member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is a founding member of SCAN and currently serves as the SCAN delegate to the House of Delegates.

Jean has presented her storytelling workshops and webinars to a wide range of audiences since 2013. She's trained business leaders, marketers, consumer insights professionals, human resources professionals, innovation teams, engineers, and scientists. In 2016, the SMK University in Lithuania featured her as the opening keynote speaker at a storytelling conference. Her highly engaging, interactive sessions get rave reviews and many organizations have had her return several times. She's presented at several dietetics conferences:
