To demonstrate value and expertise, RDNs have an opportunity to assert their role in patient care. This can be accomplished through advancing their expertise in identifying risk for and evidence of micronutrient deficiencies among patients on pharmacotherapy.
The session opens with a conversation about the role and scope of the RDN in pharmacotherapy assessment and the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach. Then, a comprehensive overview of the mechanism by which certain drugs deplete nutrient stores will be provided. Comparisons will be made with nutrient versus drug metabolism. Common drug-nutrient and drug-supplement interactions will be presented.
A discussion of commonly prescribed drugs, their impact on nutrient stores, their nutrition-related side effects, anthropometrics and lab values to monitor is also be provided. The emphasis will be on the expertise and responsibility of RDN's to identify, document and treat micronutrient deficiencies secondary to pharmacotherapy.
Use of the nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) as a valuable tool for diagnosing micronutrient deficiencies will be highlighted. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice diagnosing micronutrient deficiencies and giving patient education related to drug-nutrient and drug-supplement interactions.
