Confusion and concerns linger regarding the implementation of evidence-based obesity care in adults. This session is designed to acknowledge how the historical implementation of obesity treatment, which followed a traditional medical model and focused on individual causes, may have contributed to weight bias and stigma.
However, current models of obesity care are compassionate, client-centered, and acknowledge the social and structural challenges that individuals encounter. The session includes a focus on the importance of access to obesity care in being key in increasing health equity and reducing health disparities in overweight and obesity. This focus requires an inclusive dietetics workforce that is trained in the competencies needed to deliver effective obesity care. A roleplay will highlight the current recommended practices.
