Assessment and diagnosis of malnutrition in patients with complex disease states can often be a challenge given the disease pathophysiology and its impact on the malnutrition indicators common to current nutrition assessment methodologies. Clinicians experienced in caring for patients with liver disease, those with amyotrophic lateral stenosis and patients with congestive heart failure will provide guidance on malnutrition assessment in these patient populations.

Learning Objectives
- Identify similarities and differences between malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty and evaluate tools used to assess them in practice.
- Explain the challenge of applying current diagnostic criteria for malnutrition of complex disease states, including liver disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and heart failure.
- Identify and treat malnutrition and related conditions in patients with these complex disease states.
