A significant challenge in healthcare is the insufficient focus on MNT for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly those facing chronic diseases such as diabetes. Through an interprofessional lens this session focuses on diabetes management in adults with IDD, emphasizing the unique considerations and barriers they face, especially during the transition to adulthood.
Join us as a dual-credentialed RDN/speech-language pathologist (SLP) and expert RDN explore interprofessional approaches to nutrition and feeding for this population. The speakers will highlight the importance of collaboration in enhancing care for adults with diabetes and IDD, showcasing how the distinct yet complementary roles of RDNs and SLPs can improve patient outcomes.
Participants will learn effective communication strategies, nutritional assessment techniques, and evidence-based interventions tailored to the specific needs of adults with IDD. Through an engaging case study, attendees will observe the collaborative efforts of an RDN and an SLP in addressing the complexities of diabetes management, including behavioral and sensory challenges. Interactive discussions will allow participants to share experiences and strategies, while the latest research findings will inform innovative clinical practices.
