Approximately 1 in every 10 babies in the United States are born prematurely (less than 37 weeks gestation). Early preterm birth (less than 34 weeks gestation) is even more serious and accounts for 1.6 percent of live births.
Babies born prematurely are at increased risk for morbidities and illnesses, some of which can be lifelong. While there are many factors that contribute to a woman’s risk of delivering a preterm baby, a few – such as nutrient intake – are within a woman's direct control.
In this session you will hear about how preterm birth rates are disproportionately higher among Black women and what dietitians can do to better reach this community. Attendees hear about new intake guidelines for EPA+DHA omega-3 intake with the express purpose of reducing risk for preterm birth, and how to screen for those who may be at increased risk for preterm birth.
