Transplantation offers many advantages and improved outcomes over dialysis as a renal replacement therapy. As the speakers know firsthand, the journey to receiving a kidney transplant is not an easy one, however, and numerous barriers, such as organ shortages, inequities in access to care, and lack of social support can negatively impact outcomes.
This conversational session will explore the current state of kidney transplantation, with an emphasis on innovations, such as new drug development, inclusion of patient reported outcomes, better matching of organs, and new solutions to address the shortage of organs (for example with xenotransplantation). The speakers, both of whom have received kidney transplants, will discuss the importance of and opportunities for medical nutrition therapy and peer support interventions from both the clinician and patient perspective.
