Despite the critical role of nutrition in cancer care, routine screening for malnutrition in outpatient settings is uncommon. A systematic review led by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) assessed the validity of screening tools in adult oncology outpatients, along with clinical recommendations that included representation from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Academy of Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators, American Cancer Society, American Society for Clinical Oncology, American Society for Nutrition, American Society for Radiation Oncology, Association of Cancer Care Centers, and Oncology Nursing Society.
Six validated malnutrition screening tools were recommended, offering practical recommendations for clinical use. All cancer patients should undergo routine malnutrition risk screening utilizing a validated tool after diagnosis and throughout treatment with nutrition-specific follow-up plan for those at risk.
