In celebration of 100 years of insulin, this presentation will highlight the major advances in nutrition therapy over the past 100 years and point out the many important roles dietitians played in advancing our profession.

This was a talk that speakers, Melinda D. Maryniuk and Hope Warshaw, put together for the 2021 ADA Scientific Sessions, June 2021.

Speakers

Melinda D. Maryniuk, MEd, RDN, CDCES

After spending over 25 years with Joslin Diabetes Center directing clinical and education outreach projects in the Innovation division, Melinda started her own consulting business. Her areas of special interest include nutrition, patient education, behavior change, and increasing access to quality diabetes education services.

Ms. Maryniuk has worked in the field of diabetes education for over 40 years and has lectured and published extensively for both patient and professional audiences around the country and internationally (including: Japan, China, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain). She is active within the American Diabetes Association (ADA), having served on the Board of Directors, as chair of the Education Recognition Program Committee, Associate Editor for Clinical Diabetes and as a member of the Professional Practice Committee responsible for the Standards of Care. She has also served on the Board of Directors of ADCES and is currently on the Board for CBDCE. (Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education Specialists). Within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Ms. Maryniuk served as Chair of the Diabetes Dietetic Practice Group as well as Chair of the Division of Clinical Dietetics and Research of the Council on Practice. She is the recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Educator in Diabetes from the ADA as well as the 2010 Medallion Award from AND.

Melinda has a BS from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a MEd from Tufts University. She completed a dietetic internship at the Frances Stern Nutrition Center in Boston.

Hope Warshaw, MS, RDN, CDCES

Hope Warshaw has been a RD and CDCES for more than 40 years. Today she applies her expertise as a consultant, freelance writer and media spokesperson in her business Hope Warshaw Associates, LLC. Hope is this author of several consumer books published by ADA including Diabetes Meal Planning Made Easy and Eat Out Eat Well – The Guide to Eating Healthy in Any Restaurant. She provides consulting services to LifeScan's Diabetes Institute, Insulet Corporation, Pendulum, and others and delivers care for several online entities. She currently writes for diaTribe Foundation, T1D Exchange and other outlets. Hope was chair of DDPG in 1989-90 and has stayed actively involved. She was president of ADCES in 2016, is currently serving the Academy as chair-elect of the Academy Foundation and will assume the chair position on June 1. 

Of note, Hope and Melinda have known each other and worked together on myriad projects over many years. They attribute the origins of their long friendship and collegiality to DDPG.
