This module covers basic information about chronic kidney disease. We will discuss the burden of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States, kidney anatomy and function, how to identify and monitor CKD using the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), as well as Medicare's Medical Nutrition Therapy benefit. You will use an online calculator to determine eGFR using serum creatinine, gender, age and race.

Learning Objectives

  1. Associate kidney function with estimated glomerular filtration rate and understand significance and limitations of eGFR in assessing individual patients.
  2. Associate kidney damage with urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio and understand significance and limitations of UACR in assessing individual patients.
  3. Use eGFR and UACR when counseling patients.
  4. Define the glomerular filtration rate that qualifies Medicare beneficiaries for medical nutrition therapy referral.

The course includes pdf files of the speaker presentations and handouts as well as a downloadable CPE certificate.

The Certificate of Training program consists of five separate modules that build on each other. To receive the certificate associated with this training, all modules and related tests must first be completed and a subsequent final post test exam after the final module must be passed with a minimum of an 80%. The Certificate of Training can then be downloaded and printed from the site.
