Volunteer leadership positions can support career growth opportunities, provide meaningful networking, and lead to fun and friends! Join our conversation with two Academy members who first met by volunteering together in dietetic practice groups, and have now been friends for ten years. Past Academy President Mary Russell will interview Wendy Phillips, who will share her tips for getting involved in grassroots advocacy and leadership positions, strategies for learning and applying clinical skills to promote career growth, and ways to access resources to engage in meaningful networking opportunities. Discover how and why Wendy feels more connected to her local communities and the nutrition and dietetics field, and be prepared to be motivated to do the same.

Mary Russell, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND

Russell is a medical science liaison II, U.S. Nutrition Medical Affairs, at Baxter Healthcare and a lecturer at the Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine and Science. Previously, she was director of clinical nutrition at the University of Chicago and Duke University and held positions on the Duke nutrition support team and as an ICU/surgery dietitian clinician. Russell served as the Academy's President in 2018-2019.

A past member of the Academy's House of Delegates and of numerous Academy committees, Russell served on the Academy's Board of Directors as treasurer-elect, treasurer and immediate past treasurer and was also a member of the Academy Foundation's Board. She is past chair of the Dietitians in Nutrition Support dietetic practice group and past president of the North Carolina Dietetic Association. Russell was named the 2018 Outstanding Dietitian by the Illinois Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.


Wendy Phillips, MS, RD, CD, CNSC, CLE, NWCC, FAND

Wendy Phillips is a regional vice president for Morrison Healthcare, providing support for the food service partnership at the Cleveland Clinic. She has held multiple clinical nutrition management positions in her 20 year career, including 4 ½ years as the Western Division Director of Clinical Nutrition for Morrison and 4 ½ years as the Clinical Nutrition Director at the University of Virginia Health System. Phillips is also the Public Policy Chair of the Utah Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Chair for the Clinical Nutrition Management DPG, and an associate editor for Building Blocks for Life, the peer-reviewed newsletter from the Pediatric DPG. She has authored over 50 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

She has received multiple state and national awards, including Morrison Healthcare's regional clinical nutrition manager of the year, Outstanding Dietitian of the Year from the Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Academy's Grassroots Advocacy Award, and the Academy's Excellence in Practice – Management Practice award.
