This Certificate of Training is brought to you by the Center for Lifelong Learning in collaboration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. Support for this project was funded by a grant from Walmart. The funder was not involved in any content creation, nor did it serve in an advisory capacity for this course.

The Excelling in the Retail Food Industry Certificate of Training consists of five modules designed to build a strong foundation for new retail RDNs or those interesting in shifting to a career in food retail and while enhancing business skills and food industry knowledge for all RDNs. Completion of the certificate will prepare you for professional success as you explore opportunities within the food retail industry while ensuring your understanding of the key priorities that frame the varied and changing functions of a food retailer. It will also familiarize you with food retail terminology and strengthen your development of key business, marketing, and communication skills beyond your RDN credential.

This Certificate of Training provides you the opportunity to learn from expert retail dietitian nutritionists through engaging videos and interactive activities that allow you to practice what you've learned.

This certificate program includes the following modules:

Module 1: Health and Well-being Opportunities in Food Retail

  • Developer: Ellie Wilson, MS, RDN, CDN
  • Objectives:
    • Analyze evolving consumer and food retailer trends shaping health and well-being opportunities in food retail.
    • Explore expanded roles and responsibilities of RDNs in food retail settings.
    • Recognize and apply RDN skills beyond credentials to succeed in the food retail environment.

Module 2: Building a Business Case for Retail Dietitian Nutritionists

  • Developer: Bridget Wojciak, RDN, LD
  • Objectives:
    • Develop key messages and selling points to communicate to food retail leadership the value registered dietitians bring to their business.
    • Identify essential connections within the retail food industry and with key leaders to advocate for health and well-being growth opportunities.
    • Build a health and well-being strategy that aligns with corporate retail priorities, goals and initiatives.
    • Practice successful negotiation skills to establish strong internal and external partnerships for food retail health and well-being programming and strategic execution.

Module 3: Connecting with Customers Through Branding and Marketing

  • Developers: Shelley Maniscalco, MPH, RD; Tricia Psota, PhD, RDN, and Jaime Cohen, MS, RD
  • Objectives:
    • Build a health and well-being brand.
    • Utilize marketing strategies to enhance brand experiences for consumers.
    • Showcase marketing opportunities for RDNs to engage with consumers through digital platforms.
    • Identify resources for more in-depth media and digital marketing training.

Module 4: Developing and Evaluating Effective Programs

  • Developer: Elizabeth Hall, PhD, RDN, LDN
  • Objectives:
    • Distinguish different types of health and well-being programs in food retail settings.
    • Identify traits of successful food retail health and well-being programs.
    • Develop effective health and well-being programs to maximize outcomes.
    • Collect and communicate evaluation outcomes.
    • Discover recommended tools for collecting data and identified metrics to include in evaluation outcome reporting.

Module 5: Identifying and Applying Consumer Trends

  • Developer: Emily Parent, MFCS, RD, LD, FAND
  • Objectives:
    • Identify consumer trends to leverage health and well-being opportunities within food retail settings.
    • Locate additional resources to aid in program and promotion development.
    • Communicate go-to-market strategies to key stakeholders.
