Brought to you by the Center for Lifelong Learning with a special thank you to the content developer, Janice Baker, MBA, RDN, CDE, CNSC, BC-ADM. Planned with The Diabetes DPG.
There are many acute care considerations for patients with diabetes. Treatment of hypo and hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) will be discussed. The hospitalized patient with diabetes benefits greatly from the RDNs role in implementing diet orders, provided needed supplements, and meeting educational needs. It is important to consider conditions that influence serum glucose levels as well as medications used for the management of diabetic patients while they are hospitalized. Discharge planning presents unique considerations for patients both with diabetes. The RDN can be a valuable advocate for the patient to the physician and the entire care team.
